Cthulhu-Chan Dice Cup

Posted by Fallon Foster on

I think this is my fourth or fifth prototype for the Dice Cups so far and I'm pretty close to nailing down the geometry.  It's taken me this long to figure out it's the circumference of the stitch that's the primary factor, rather than the circumference of the material.  I came up a bit shy on my estimates this time but a couple of troublesome splices and it's all done.  I'm expecting to make one more prototype to verify the pattern and then it should be ready for production.  The handle/lid retainer's working pretty well too.The design this time was...

Prototype Dice Cup, Mark III

For the third round I wanted to focus on correctly honing in the geometry and adding a strap across the body of the cup.  I figured this could function as both a handle and as a way to lock the lid in place.Unfortunately the first lid I made turned out pretty distorted.  I'd picked a scaled design that I knew would distort the lid to some extent but I grossly underestimated by how much.  I did make a second lid, sized to fit directly over the body.  Of course, the geometry of the stitching meant that the lid is now exactly the...

Prototype Dice Cup, Mark II

I figured I could make a prototype that was a bit shorter and tighten up some of the dimensions here and there.  I also have half a dozen ideas for dice cup designs I'm hoping to test out.  So today was a good time to try another design and some slightly different measurements out. I'm pretty pleased with how the designs came out.  The yin/yang design uses a bit texturing and resist to maximize the contrast.  The wrap-around dragon is painted with a gold enamel paint that tends to be a bit messy in large areas but I think it...

Prototype Dice Cup

I'd completely forgotten that dice cups were a thing until I saw a few at PAX South. The ones there were serviceable but clearly made from imprinted artificial leather assembled with a simple whip stitch.  I figured I could, at the very least, improve on the art.And this is what I came up with over the weekend.  So far as it's construction goes it's not much different from the Navigator map case; just shorter and a little bit simpler.  It doesn't need to be able to survive a rain storm so the construction isn't quite as heavy-duty.  It also means...
